Energy Savings

Gas tankless water heaters heat water only when you need it, which means you don't waste energy keeping a tank of water hot all day and night. This on-demand heating saves money on your energy bills, compared to traditional tank models.

How it Works

How gas tankless water heaters work

When you install a natural gas or propane tankless water heater in your home, it connects directly to your water line to deliver hot water on demand. When you turn on a hot water tap, the water flow sensor inside your water heater starts working and turns on the burner. Water flows through the heat exchanger, which heats your water to the temperature you want and gives you a steady supply of hot water. When you turn off your water tap, the unit shuts down to save energy.

Still Have Questions?

Yes, a gas tankless water heater uses less energy than a conventional tank water heater because it doesn't need to keep 40-50 gallons of water heated all the time. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, a tankless water heater uses up to 34% less energy than a tank water heater for homes using less than 41 gallons of water per day and up to 14% less energy for homes using 86 gallons of water daily.

Yes, a tankless water heater saves energy because it only heats water when you turn on an appliance or hot water tap. Tankless installation typically costs more upfront because of changes needed to gas piping, but our newest condensing models come with X3® Scale Reduction Technology that prevents mineral buildup, removes the need for regular maintenance, and helps the unit last up to three times longer.

American tankless water heaters feature industry-leading 15-year limited warranties. How long a gas tankless water heater lasts depends on things like your water quality, how much you use it, and how well you maintain it, but new condensing units come with X3® Scale Reduction Technology that helps them last up to three times longer.

Tankless water heaters have different flow rates measured in gallons per minute (GPM), which shows how much water they can deliver at once. The correct flow rate for your home depends on how many people live there, which appliances you use at the same time, and how cold your incoming water is.

Before installing, you need to find out your incoming groundwater temperature, pick the best spot in your home, and figure out the right water heater size for your household's needs. A tankless water heater can be installed anywhere in your home with the correct piping, and in warmer climates where freezing isn't a problem, you can install it outside your home to save indoor space.
