How Gas Tank Water Heaters Work

How a Gas Tank Water Heater Works

American gas water heaters provide hot water for your home by burning natural gas or propane (LP). All models have a thermostat that controls the water temperature you want. Here's what happens when you turn on the hot water: hot water flows from the tank through your home's pipes while cold water automatically refills the tank. The thermostat checks the water temperature, and when the water gets too cool, the burner turns on to reheat it.

Two Types of Ignition Systems

Standard models use a small flame called a pilot light that stays lit all the time. When your water needs heating, gas flows to the main burner where the pilot light ignites it. High-efficiency models work differently. They use an electronic gas valve with either a spark or a hot surface ignitor. These models don't need a pilot light burning 24/7, which saves gas. Both types shut off the main gas valve once your water reaches the right temperature.

Venting Requirements

The heating process creates exhaust gases that must go outside your home. Different gas water heater models need different venting setups. A licensed plumber can help you choose a water heater that works with your home's ventilation. You can also use our online XPERT™ Product Selector to find the right model.

Built to Last

Every American gas tank water heater includes features that extend its life. The glass-lined tank protects the steel from rust and corrosion, while the anode rod neutralizes harmful minerals in your water. The temperature and pressure relief valve prevents dangerous pressure buildup. These parts work together to give you years of reliable hot water

Still Have Questions?

Electric tank water heaters typically have higher efficiency ratings than gas tank models. Gas models lose some heat through venting, but American's high-efficiency condensing gas tank water heaters feature improved insulation and heat traps for better performance.

American gas tank water heaters last 6-12 years with proper maintenance. Annual professional service helps extend the life of your water heater by preventing mineral buildup and catching problems early.

Gas tank water heaters store hot water in an insulated tank that's ready when you need it. Gas tankless water heaters heat water instantly without storing it, only using energy when you turn on the tap.

The right size water heater depends on your home's hot water use and available installation space. Use our online XPERT™ Water Heater Selector for a personalized recommendation based on your needs.

American strongly recommends professional installation for gas water heaters. Licensed plumbers handle gas connections, venting requirements, and local codes safely while protecting your warranty.
