EnergyGuide Label

EnergyGuide is a label made available for American Water Heaters at the Air-Conditioning, Heating, and Refrigeration Institute (AHRI).

Electric Water Heaters: Cost of Operation

Energyguide label example

A residential water heater can account for up to 30% of a household’s energy costs, second only to a home’s heating and cooling system. Selecting the right water heater, one that is both efficient and appropriately sized, can significantly reduce your monthly energy bill.

All residential water heaters come with standard EnergyGuide labels. This government-regulated information helps you compare the performance and operating costs of different models.

  1. MODEL – The unit’s model number.
  2. RATED STORAGE VOLUME – The storage volume as measured and defined by the Department of Energy.
  3. ESTIMATED YEARLY ENERGY COST – The projected annual cost to operate the unit, based on typical daily hot water use and average energy prices set by the U.S. government.
  4. FIRST HOUR RATING – The amount of hot water the heater can deliver in the first hour of operation.
  5. OTHER RELEVANT FACTORS – Additional considerations, including the estimated annual energy cost, based on average hot water usage and government-defined energy prices.
