Water Heater Safety
American has provided innovative and safe water heaters for your home for years. Through engineering and technology, American water heaters are lab tested and may have features that can detect problems before they occur.
Tank Water Heater Safety
American water heaters are thoroughly tested and built with advanced features that help detect potential issues before they happen. Explore the list below to learn more about the innovative safety features included in every American tank water heater.
How We Make Your Water Heater Safer
Venting
Proper venting ensures that exhaust gases from your water heater are safely directed outside your home. Several venting configurations are available, each designed to meet specific installation needs. Consult a licensed plumbing professional to ensure you select the correct option for your home.
Glass-Lined Tank
Americans’ glass-lined tanks offer an added layer of protection and efficiency. The glass lining helps retain heat within the tank while shielding the steel exterior from damage.
Anode Rod
Every American glass-lined water heater includes a sacrificial anode rod to extend the tank’s lifespan. The rod generates a mild electrical current that minimizes corrosion through cathodic protection, safeguarding both the glass lining and your water from corrosive elements.
Energy Cut Off (ECO)
Each American water heater includes a built-in Energy Cut-Off (ECO) switch to prevent overheating. While your heater maintains water within a set temperature range, the ECO automatically activates if the temperature rises above safe levels. If overheating occurs, contact a local plumbing professional for assistance.
Temperature and Pressure (T&P) Relief Valve
If water temperature or pressure rises above safe limits, the T&P relief valve opens to release excess pressure and hot water. Because water expands when heated, we recommend using an expansion tank to maintain safe pressure levels. A leaking T&P valve can indicate unsafe conditions—contact a qualified plumbing contractor if this happens.
FVIR (Flammable Vapor Ignition Resistant)
Never store or use gasoline or other flammable vapors near your water heater or any appliance. American residential gas water heaters meet ANSI Standard Z21.10.1 (current edition), helping prevent accidental ignition of flammable vapors, such as those released by gasoline.
